Needham in turn hired Conner as his lead villain, the Helltrack qualifier who plays along with Best’s corporate interests. Case in point: Needham is the acknowledged inspiration for Brad Pitt’s stuntman character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. ![]() By the mid-’80s, Needham, the actor, stuntman, and director of Smokey and the Bandit and Cannonball Run, was a few years off his peak, but he still carried that swaggering, old-school Hollywood cachet. RAD took off in earnest when Jack Schwartzman hired Needham to helm the movie, which follows Cru as he defies both his mother’s wishes and those of the deceitful president of the Federation of American Bicyclists, Duke Best. And I’m doing this and I’m really into it, and here’s this little boy and he says, ‘Stop! Can’t somebody just get her a job?!’” And I started reading Robert Lowell’s Prometheus Bound, which is heavy duty. “I got my kids up, I made them lunch, and Jack and I carpooled.” It was at bedtime, Shire says, when she read to the kids and they’d remember she was an actress: “I - got a little bit dramatic.” She recalls one night, when she enthralled Jason with Romeo and Juliet. “‘My son! Who didn’t do the SATs!’” In reality, her life revolved around her children. “I was always talking about the SATs ,” she says, laughing. Taliafilm’s namesake, a two-time Oscar nominee for Rocky and The Godfather Part II, intended to remain behind the scenes on RAD, but, late in the process, she agreed to play Cru’s BMX-hating, spoilsport mom. “I didn’t understand the complexities of putting a movie together, but Jack Schwartzman was a master at it.” And looking back on, I’m gonna tell you a secret: I don’t know how helpful I was.” She laughs. “It was wonderful but also very stressful. “We had little children, and Jack really liked to be available to those kids,” Shire says. But with RAD, he pivoted to PG fare under the name of his production company, Taliafilm, which was based in his family home in L.A. Through the late ’70s and early ’80s, Jack Schwartzman produced films like the Peter Sellers classic Being There and Never Say Never Again, Sean Connery’s last outing as James Bond. And when you have a chance to revisit someone’s work, you have a chance to revisit them.” Jack died in 1994, and I miss him every day. “But now it’s going to have its opportunity for its next incarnation. My God, all those years ago,” says Shire. Robert and Jason’s mother, Talia Shire, helped her husband produce the movie and had a small onscreen role. His half-brother, the Oscar-winning cinematographer John Schwartzman, shot the intro’s mesmeric BMX footage. And then he exposes the world of corruption within the sport”), as was his brother, the actor Jason Schwartzman. The younger Schwartzman had been on the set of RAD (“I loved that Cru is such a badass,” he recalls. It was produced by Jack Schwartzman, who passed away in the mid-’90s and whose son Robert Schwartzman, the former Rooney frontman turned movie director, helmed the rerelease through his distribution company, Utopia Films. (The comedians specifically borrowed the music of John Farnham, whose big, dumb power ballads - “Break the Ice,” “Thunder in Your Heart” - are all over RAD.) Still, RAD was never made widely available on DVD, let alone on a digital rental platform - until July 2020, that is, when a newly restored 4K version of the film so few people actually saw finally hit on-demand platforms. A Guardian investigation into 10,000 movies in the Rotten Tomatoes database found RAD to be the film with the greatest discrepancy between critical reception and fan love, and it has retained prominent boosters: Over the years, the cast has heard fawning tales of love for the movie from Shaq, Pharrell, and, unsurprisingly, the Lonely Island, whose 2007 film Hot Rod bears clear RAD overtones. The movie lived on instead in the hearts and minds of BMX diehards, who made it a Blockbuster rental staple and then passed around bootlegs for years. Despite being a perfect relic of feel-good ’80s underdog drama, RAD never quite cracked the cult-film canon, either. The movie was panned, then bombed and disappeared. Says Olympic gold-medal-winning gymnast Bart Conner, who played the Billy Zabka–esque villain, Bart Taylor, “It stayed in theaters maybe a day and a half?” Directed by the iconic ex-stuntman Hal Needham, it told the story of Cru Jones (Bill Allen), a scrappy young biker fighting corporate malfeasance and dreaming of impossible glory in an insane BMX race called Helltrack. In March of 1986, a sports movie called RAD - all damn caps - hit U.S. Nobody saw the 1986 movie about a hometown BMX hero directed by Hal Needham and produced by Jack Schwartzman. ![]()

So there will be at least 15 scenes in your book: So the first breakdown of the 80,000 to 100,000 word book are the scenes necessary to create the five building materials for your beginning, middle and end of your Global Story. (I’ll review the building blocks of Story in future posts too.) The First 15 Scenes The key building block for a long form narrative is the Scene. ![]() (Don’t worry I’ll go over these crucial elements of story form in much greater detail in upcoming posts.) I think about the Inciting Incident scenes, Progressive Complications scenes, the Crisis scenes, the Climax scenes and the Resolution scenes for the beginning, middle and end of a book. Instead I concentrate on the five building materials for each of the three sections. The beginning may comprise 2 Acts, the middle 3 acts and the end 2 acts, but I don’t really care. For me, the Beginning, Middle and End are all that matter. As an editor, I don’t worry so much about figuring out exactly how many ACTS are in a book. No matter how many Acts you have (3 to 5 to 7), you need a beginning to your story, a middle section to your story and an ending to your story. To keep it simple, you’ll need a beginning, middle, and an end to your story. Let’s break it down further using the Foolscap method. So, it’s a safe assumption to make that if you want to begin a path that will satisfy a particular readership, your goal is to put together 80,000 to 100,000 words in a unique and compelling way. It’s the length the average reader is expecting-not too much and not too little. Are there exceptions? Sure, but this ballpark range is where the novel has settled over the last twenty years or so. The average length of a commercial novel today is between 80,000 and 100,000 words. So let’s look a novel in mathematical terms. Same goes with writing or editing a long form Story. If you can do that one skill well (and you can screw it up very easily too) you are well on your way to learning how to frame a house. Measuring the length of a board, marking where to cut it, and then taking a saw and ripping it at that mark is the primal skill for a carpenter. But if you break the work down into its component parts, you’ll reach a very doable level of skill…a skill that is relatively easy to master. ![]() Your mind can’t really wrap itself around framing a house. It’s much easier to figure out where to cut a piece of lumber than it is framing a house. Math helps you break problems into little bits. And a very cursory look at the math of a novel is definitely worth the time. That is why you became a writer/storyteller. How many scenes in a novel is a math question. If we can cut our problems into bite size pieces that we can contend with one by one, one day, one session at a time, then we can beat Resistance into submission and finish our first draft or edit our first draft. To demystify exactly how a lump sum of words can be broken down into component parts is extraordinarily helpful. At the beginning of the long form Story process, the problems we face are innumerable. And the problem we’re facing now is figuring out how to map out a course to get from idea to first draft or of how to evaluate the first draft we have in hand. The Problem is the Problemīut before we dive into it, remember that you are not the problem. 25% of them are for the Beginning Hook, 50% are for the Middle Build, and 25% are for the Ending Payoff. This is where a little rudimentary math will help. How do you begin to actually map out the rest of your Story? How long will it take you to write the first draft? How many scenes should be in a novel? Is there a way to take the “beginning hook, middle build, and ending payoff” concepts even further to break down the work into more “doable” parts? So you have the top quarter of your Foolscap Global Story Grid filled in. You can find out which images are a candidate for lazy loading and how many bytes you can save on the initial page load by using the Google Lighthouse audit tool. This will become more apparent as we explore lazy loading in the coming sections. The reduction in bytes transferred from your delivery network or server reduces delivery costs. This is especially true for users that instantly bounce off a page or interact only with the top portion of the content. Thus, you may reduce the total bytes delivered on the page and ultimately save yourself a few pennies in the process. ![]() A lazy-loaded image may never get loaded if the user never reaches it. Cloud hosting services, like Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) or web servers or storages, deliver images (or any asset for that matter) at a cost based on the number of bytes transferred. The second benefit is for you as a website administrator. Hence, the time from request to render becomes smaller and the page becomes usable much earlier. This ensures that any device on any network is able to download and process the remaining resources much faster. And fewer bytes to download means the page renders faster than if those bytes and requests were being made. Fewer image requests mean fewer bytes to download. ![]() Lazy loading reduces the number of images that need to be loaded on a page upfront. The obvious benefit is that we get smaller web pages that load faster. Here are two of the advantages we get with lazy loading. You may already start to see how this benefits both you and the user. It also never loads in the first place because, hey, it was never needed. If the user never scrolls to the point of the page that contains the image, then the user will never see that image. We will stick to lazy loading images in this guide, but it’s good to know it can be applied to other assets. Same deal for an image-load it when we need it. For example, even a JavaScript file can be held back if it is best not to load it initially. The technique of lazy loading can be applied to just about any resources on a page. ![]() These techniques help in improving performance, better utilization of the device’s resources and reducing associated costs. Lazy Loading is a set of techniques in web and application development that defers the loading of resources on a page to a later point in time-when those resources are actually needed instead of loading them up front. Instead of loading them right away, which is what normally happens, we allow them to load later. Similarly, lazy loading defers the loading of resources on the page as long as they are not needed. We often associate the word “lazy” with avoiding work as long as possible, or the sheer act of wanting to do nothing at all. ![]() ![]() This is a new and innovative approach training that is centered around students’ social and emotional needs and helps them figure out how to navigate their own personal problems at college.
